Kids learning from and with kids...
Kruger Kids is a learning platform for kids, by kids, Stefan and Saskia Kriel. Our mission is to educate children about nature and her secrets, and how to respect and keep our nature healthy. Here, you will find interesting facts about the wild, in addition to fun activities and interesting videos. It is our hope that children will learn how to prepare for going out in nature, as well as learn about the wild through our creative arts and crafts projects. A Kruger Kids activity book, which will be for children of all ages and could be used in the classroom as well, is currently in the making – so watch this space!
So, how did it all start?
Siblings, Stefan and Saskia, were born 3 years apart in the Northern Cape, South Africa. They spent their early years living in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park where their dad worked for South African National Parks. The Kgalagadi is in the Northern Cape, on the boundaries of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
With his 3 year lead on his sister, Stefan experienced a bit more of the desert before they moved to Mpumalanga, where their parents aimed to balance getting a good education, and learning about technology, with the wonder and beauty of living in the bush.
Stefan’s time with his dad in KTP (Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) included many excursions, and not surprisingly, he could make animal sounds way before he could even say their names! He sometimes went out on 3-day outings into the dunes, sleeping in tents and having a bath in a plastic bucket. It was a wonderful, unique experience for anyone, let alone a little boy.
Both Stefan and Saskia were those little ones who always have to be reminded to wear their shoes – even now, their first preference is barefoot. Who can blame them, when they have known the joy of walking barefoot in the ancient red sands of the legendary Kalahari desert. Of course, as most children do, they also ate a fair amount of sand, and their parents attributed their excellent health to the iron-rich red Kalahari sand.
That was the beginning of their deep love and appreciation of the wild – a journey which continues daily as they explore the treasures of the world-famous Kruger National Park. So, they invite you to share in their wild adventures as they see and learn new things about life and nature through the wild.
